NACE Schools students experience a simulation of the United Nations

From the 27th to the 30th of January, one of NACE Schools’ most important multicultural events was held at the Jaime I University in Castellón: the 2nd annual NACE Model United Nations (NACEMUN). This was a truly unique learning experience in which our pupils took part in a simulation of the United Nations.

NACEMUN 2016

NACEMUN reflects the educational excellence and global readiness which characterise the schools in the NACE group: it is a simulation of the United Nations sessions in which more than 180 pupils from our schools in Spain, France and England participate. 4th ESO, Baccalaureate and International Baccalaureate pupils all took part in this great educational and cultural event which was hosted this year by Agora Lledó International School.

With the support of the other participating schools, Agora Lledó International School did a wonderful job of organising this simulation of the United Nations. Over the course of 4 days, the pupils acquired knowledge and skills which will be useful to them in later life. Through studying and discussing global issues in English in the NACEMUN debates, our students practised and improved their public speaking skills, rhetoric and negotiation, and acquired greater awareness of global problems. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the entire event was one of respect for and tolerance of diversity, helping pupils to understand that the best way to resolve conflict is through dialogue.

The preparation each pupil did before the event was fundamental, given that the topics dealt with in this simulation of the United Nations were the same as those discussed in the official sessions. For this reason, all our pupils spent time beforehand educating and familiarising themselves with the current international agenda, and studying the history, and economic, cultural and social situation of the country they were to represent. They learnt about and reflected on the interests of each nation and its international relations in order to accurately portray their position in the NACEMUN sessions and become true delegates.

At this second edition of the NACEMUN we were fortunate enough to have the attendance of several important professionals: Amparo Marco, the Mayoress of Castellón de la Plana and Valencian Economist; Dragoş Viorel, Minister Plenipotentiary from the Romanian Consulate in Castellón de la Plana; and Manuel Bueno, member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. This is something which reinforced the seriousness of this simulation of the United Nations.

Mayoress Amparo Marco took part, together with Luis Madrid, headmaster of Agora Lledó International School, in the closing ceremony of the second NACE Model United Nations, in which pupils were awarded their certificates. This simulation of the United Nations was seen as a great achievement thanks to the many benefits it offered pupils. It was, without doubt, a unique learning experience which contributed to the academic and personal growth of all the participants.
